Bagas Mahardika (b. 2001) is an emerging Indonesian contemporary artist whose practice explores the intersections of faith, memory, domestic life, and the quiet tensions of everyday existence. Working primarily through oil painting, his works draw from familiar religious imagery and ordinary objects, transforming them into contemplative spaces where personal experience meets broader social and cultural narratives. Rather than offering definitive answers, his paintings invite viewers to linger in moments of uncertainty, vulnerability, and reflection.
Bagas graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, where he developed a strong foundation in painting while cultivating a lasting interest in art history. His visual language is deeply informed by the dramatic chiaroscuro, theatrical compositions, and emotional intensity. At the same time, his practice engages with the conceptual approaches of modern and contemporary artists – like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, whose works demonstrate how context, intervention, and symbolism can transform the way we perceive familiar subjects. This dialogue between historical painting traditions and contemporary artistic discourse continues to shape his exploration of faith, memory, and everyday life.
